The beefsteak plant holds potential as a natural cure for baldness

The beefsteak plant (Perilla frutescens) could be used to trigger hair growth, according to researchers from South Korea. Their findings, which was published in the Journal of Natural Medicines, looked at the ability of an extract derived from P. frutescens to stimulate hair regrowth.

  • Researchers obtained the extract from dried P. frutescens leaves that have been suspended in distilled water. The resulting aqueous suspension was processed to obtain fractions using hexane, ethyl acetate, n-butanol, and distilled water.
  • Among the isolates, the n-butanol fraction had the highest hair regrowth activity.
  • To determine which compound was responsible for hair regrowth, the n-butanol fraction was further processed to reveal rosmarinic acid.
  • The fraction also exhibited anti-androgenic activity based on a mouse model of C57Bl/6NCrSlc mice.
  • An in vitro assessment revealed the effects of P. frutescens in hair fibroblast cells (PHFCs) treated with rosmarinic acid.

The findings revealed that the active ingredient in the hair growth properties of P. frutescens was rosmarinic acid, which could be used to promote hair growth.
